How to read the dial

Dial number, e.g. 20. Coarser than 50 continues into the unmarked part of the dial (HCG writes 0.56 for number 56, 1.14 for one rotation plus 14)

Zero: 'calibrate' mark = burrs touching (recalibrate after cleaning by aligning bezel)

Good to know

  • Stepless dial. microns_per_step (about 13 µm per number) is back-calculated from Honest Coffee Guide's chart: espresso 15-30 maps to 180-380 µm and V60 33-56 maps to 400-700 µm. HCG does not say how it measured the grinder.
  • zero_offset_um set to 0 so the formula reproduces HCG's chart (HCG lists the range as 0-1400 µm). It is a fitted value, not a measured particle size.
  • HCG's ranges run past 50 (e.g. French press 56-114). Niche's own chart stops at '45+'. The recommender clamps at 50; users going coarser should keep turning into the unmarked area.
  • Run the motor for 1 second every 10 marks when moving finer after a coarse setting (manual).
  • Factory set to 20. Never run at the calibrate mark; burrs touch there.
  • Retention: Niche says under 0.1 g. Motor wattage is not published.
