How to read the dial
Dial number, e.g. 20. Each notch moves the burrs 6 µm. In stepless mode (after conversion) you can sit between notches, e.g. 20.5.
Zero: factory-calibrated with a small gap at 0 so the burrs never touch; user can re-index by repositioning the adjustment cover
Can be converted from stepped to stepless by removing a sprocket under the adjustment cover (Mazzer calls it a simple procedure).
No published chart for this grinder. The recommender calculates a setting from grind size.
Good to know
- No published grind chart from Mazzer, and Honest Coffee Guide has no Philos page that we found, so settings is empty. The formula has to handle it, and zero_offset_um is unknown (null) because Mazzer sets 0 with an unstated gap.
- Clive Coffee's review gives an example of espresso around 20 and pour-over around 70 on the dial. That is one reviewer's setup, not a chart, so it is not in settings. Another reviewer says the manual suggests 10-40 for espresso; we did not see the manual.
- Mazzer says each notch is 6 µm of burr widening. We assume one notch = one printed dial number; photos show numbers 20-50 printed as graduations, but this is not confirmed in writing. A Home-Barista post mentions a 0-145 scale, unverified, so range.max is null.
- One full rotation covers espresso to batch brew (Mazzer FAQ). The revolution counter helps if you go past one turn.
- A Swiss review (kaffeemacher) says 0.6 µm per step; that conflicts with Mazzer's own 6 µm and is probably a typo.
- Cleaning does not change the setting: the adjustment is on the rear burr, and the front carrier comes off with wing nuts.
- RPM: 1400 at 50 Hz, 1600 at 60 Hz (North America). Motor is a 400 W asynchronous (AC) motor; one AU retailer lists 400-600 W.
- Retention: Mazzer says negligible; Clive measured as little as 0.1 g using the chute knocker and Dose Finisher. Hopper is 60 g, or up to 24 g with the hopper removed.
