How to read the dial
Dial number, e.g. 30. Stepless, so halves are fine (30.5). 0 is set at the burr-chirp point.
Zero: burrs touching (adjustable zero; calibrate the pointer to 0 at first chirp)
Variable speed knob, 300-1800 RPM (DF USA). Slower speeds are often used for filter clarity, faster for espresso body.

Good to know
- Stepless collar. burr_travel_um_per_step (about 8.3 µm per number) is a Home-Barista forum estimate: roughly 1 mm of burr travel per full turn, with the printed 0-90 covering about three quarters of a turn. Nobody in that thread measured it, and it may come from the non-V DF83. Treat as approximate.
- HCG lists the range as 130-1150 µm. zero_offset_um = 130 is the bottom of that range, an estimate, not a measurement.
- HCG settings were read from search-result extracts of the HCG table, not a direct read of the page (the table loads with script). Spot-check against the page before relying on them.
- HCG's chart does not say which burr set it assumes. Espresso burrs and brew burrs grind differently at the same number; brew-burr owners usually sit a bit coarser for espresso.
- Do not confuse with the non-V DF83, which HCG charts separately (110-950 µm, espresso 8-28, V60 32-63).
- RPM range differs by seller: DF USA says 300-1800, Eight Ounce and several others say 300-1600. motor.rpm stores the top of DF USA's range.
- Owners on Home-Barista report some play in the adjustment collar, so approach a setting from the same direction each time.
- Retention is not published as a number; DF says low retention with the bellows.
